This Week's Current Links--May 4-11, 2021

Check out my new Domestic Cricket Blog (12 countries). Links to results, video (full match and highlights, match reports, standings, etc.). Have entries for Afghanistan,  England, and New Zealand (New Zealand completed April 21). Working on Australia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Sri Lanka, British West Indies, and Ireland. They should be coming on board soon.

Recently there has been a bit of a format change. I am going to arrange these in general topic (alphabetic within topic), with the sports at the bottom.

Section 1: News
Section 2: Politics, culture (art, music, theatre, film, TV,), science and technology, etc.
Section 3: Sports

There will be no anchors, as I still don't know how to make anchors, but you can use the section headings yourself as an anchor mechanism. Use the "find" function of whatever your device is (CTRL-f on PCs) and copy the section heading into the sign box. That will get you to the part of the report you are interested in. I will try to keep "Section #" unique to this function so that you can jump around easily to any of the sections.

I am also going to be making use of Youtube playlists more. That way, you can look at a topic and decide for yourself which links within the playlist to use. Playlists almost (but not) always have the most current links at the top of the list and will also tell you when the latest link was added. This should be particularly helpful for news sites, which tend to be prolific.

Hopefully, these changes will make it easier for you to find what is of interest to you, as well as digging into particular subjects more deeply than a single Youtube link would.

Finally, I have decided to make this a weekly for the time being.  There will be plenty to keep you entertained in each issue, as well as enough context links for you to keep current yourself if you wish.

As always, enjoy

Andrew Lloyd Webber The Shows Must Go On

UPCOMING:

Cats (Full Show) Premiers May 14 (AVAILABLE FOR 48 HOURS ONLY)

"Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS, the most famous musical of all time, first exploded onto the West End stage in 1981. 'Memory', one of its many classic songs, became an instant worldwide hit. Since then CATS has smashed records and conquered the world. Using the latest technology, all the excitement, thrill, romance and intimacy of this theatrical legend has been captured on screen. Breathtaking visuals and full digital sound (that has been completely re-recorded with a seventy piece orchestra) will leave you deep into the mysterious world of CATS as you've never seen it before -- more intoxicating and magical than you could possibly imagine. With a star cast including Elaine Paige and Sir John Mills."

PLAYING NOW:

Border Tails (Full Show)  (mature subject matter
Run has been extended, don't know for how long (still available as of May 11, 2021)

"Border Tales, Luca Silvestrini’s Protein’s smash-hit commentary on multicultural Britain seen through the eyes of an international cast, is told through dance, live music and dialogue compiled from the performers’ personal experiences. With this broadcast we contribute to breaking down the walls of silence that uphold and sustain ‘borders’ around the world."

After the Interval (Full Show) available from April 30

"'After the Interval' (2012) and its sequel 'Before the Interval' (2014), conceived and directed by Luca Silvestrini for award-winning HeadSpaceDance will be presented together for the first time giving you the chance to see them in their continuity. 'Before the Interval' will be available from Friday 7th May 7pm BST.

'After the Interval' pins Silvestrini’s observational genius to satirising dancing life. A show about dance and dancers that opens with the performers’ curtain calls, who then answer audience questions, and continues with revivals of their past stage roles and steps. After the Interval brings to the fore the art of dance making and the backstage lives of dancers while celebrating Broom/Akrill’s 20 years joint career and the start of their company HeadSpaceDance."

Before the Interval (Full Show) available from May 7

"Before the Interval' imposed itself as the obvious title for this second commission in which Akrill, Goddard and Sveaas take Broom’s absence as a cue to promote their own talents as dancer-directors, projecting themselves into what their future selves could be. Using Silvestrini’s style of humorous, satirical dance theatre, they speak their thoughts about their potential careers, audience expectations and hold conversations as they simultaneously move."

Film

Canadian National Film Board documentary. NFB makes a limited amount of its films available free of charge outside the country. They usually feature one per week. This week we have been gifted three.

1. Earth to Mouth by Yung Chong (2002, 41 minutes)

"Filmed at the Wing Fong Farm in Ontario, this documentary follows the tilling, planting and harvesting of Asian vegetables destined for Chinese markets and restaurants. On 80 acres of land, Lau King-Fai, her son and a half-dozen migrant Mexican workers care for the plants. For Yeung Kwan, her son, the farm represents personal and financial independence. For his mother, it is an oasis of peace. For the Mexican workers, it provides jobs that help support their children back home."

2.  The Streetby Caroline Leaf--animated (1976, 10 minutes)

"This award-winning animation is a poignant interpretation of a short story by Montreal author Mordecai Richler. It makes a strong statement about how many families respond to their old and infirm members. In washes of watercolour and ink, filmmaker Caroline Leaf illustrates reactions to a dying grandmother, capturing family feelings and distilling them into harsh reality."

Last week's Best Free Game of the Day--On May 9, MLB offered every game on the schedule save one for free viewing. Those games are now available on demand and without geographic blackout restrictions. For those unfamiliar with Major League Baseball (or unfamiliar with its recent evolution), you will see a microcosm of everything the sport has to offer at this level. You will see blow outs (3), pitchers' duels (4), one run games (6), and extra inning games (1). You will see 18 home runs (low by modern standards for 12 games) and 212 (about par) strikeouts. The strikeouts average to about 18 per game, or 1/3 of the outs. Whatever you may think of the modern game, this is an extraordinary act of generosity by MLB.
