Recently there has been a bit of a format change. I am going to arrange these in general topic (alphabetic within topic), with the sports at the bottom.

Section 3: Sports

There will be no anchors, as I still don't know how to make anchors, but you can use the section headings yourself as an anchor mechanism. Use the "find" function of whatever your device is (CTRL-f on PCs) and copy the section heading into the sign box. That will get you to the part of the report you are interested in. I will try to keep "Section #" unique to this function so that you can jump around easily to any of the sections. 

I am also going to be making use of Youtube playlists more. That way, you can look at a topic and decide for yourself which links within the playlist to use. Playlists almost (but not) always have the most current links at the top of the list and will also tell you when the latest link was added. This should be particularly helpful for news sites, which tend to be prolific. 

Hopefully, these changes will make it easier for you to find what is of interest to you, as well as digging into particular subjects more deeply than a single Youtube link would.

Finally, I have decided to make this a weekly for the time being.  There will be plenty to keep you entertained in each issue, as well as enough context links for you to keep current yourself if you wish.

Film

Canadian National Film Board documentary. NFB makes a limited amount of its films available free of charge outside the country. They usually feature one per week. This week we have been gifted three.

1. Stravinsky, by Roman Kroitor and Wolf Koenig (1966, 49 minutes)

"This documentary is an informal portrait of the great modern composer Igor Stravinsky. Proudly American, though still very much an Old World figure with a long and alert memory for people and events in music, literature and art, Stravinsky is depicted here conducting the CBC Symphony Orchestra in a recording of his Symphony of Psalms."

2. The Concert Man, by Toni Ianzelo (1982, 27 minutes)

"This documentary short is a portrait of violinist, composer and dreamer Maurice Zbriger, who shared his music with Montrealers for over half a century. He hired musicians and singers and conducted them in free concerts financed with income from his ownership of Schwartz's, the famous smoked meat restaurant. The Concert Man looks at Zbriger's life, his passion for music and the people who were a part of his dream."

3. Oscar, by Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre (2016, 12 minutes)

"Brilliantly mixing animated sequences and archival footage, Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre paints a touching portrait of virtuoso pianist Oscar Peterson. As with her previous films (McLaren’s Negative and Jutra), Saint-Pierre pursues her bold and personal approach with this animated documentary of Oscar Peterson at the twilight of an exceptional career, as he wistfully meditates on the price of fame and the impacts of the artist’s life on family life. From the young prodigy’s beginnings in Little Burgundy to his triumphs on the international stage alongside the biggest stars of his time, Oscar explores the profound solitude of an artist constantly on tour, and the difficulty in reconciling his professional success with his role as husband and father. Set to the tunes of Peterson’s sometimes catchy, sometimes melancholy-tinged compositions, the film alternates between animated sequences and footage of radio and video interviews to tell a heartfelt story about a life in jazz."

Sports 

This week features a broad but shallow dive into the recently concluded Russian Kontinental Hockey League (Ice Hockey) Gagarin Cup Playoffs. It is Russia's version of the Stanley Cup. Results of every match in the playoffs are made available through succinct highlights. Almost every goal is presented. A short summary is given at the end of every match. At the end of each round, there are highlights of the best goals, shots, saves, and hits of that round. At the end there are also "best of" highlights of  the Finals, Playoffs, and 2021 season. 1. 2020/21 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions League

3. Czech Extraliga

Multiple games are live streamed each week. The origins are the Youtube sites of the teams, but you can reach them through the calendar (TV) listed at the League Web site, which will also give you all score, statistical, standing, etc. information. Games are played on weekends.

4. German Bundesliga 

One of the teams in the League, the Haar Disciples, streams selected games via Youtube. The playlist has the latest game at the bottom. Long times indicate doubleheaders. (Through May 1).
Context: German Bundesliga (scores, schedules, box scores, standings, game stories (German). Box scores are in English and include English play-by-plays that indicate the count at the time of result pitches.

CPBL TV Youtube Game Highlights (longer highlights  (anything over 8 or 9 minutes) are the full game highlights). Highlights are dated. For a more contextual view of highlights, they can also be accessed from the CPBL Website Calendar (click on F for highlights). The box scores and game stories are in Chinese. However, the standings are presented in English. Because there are only four teams in the League, a split schedule is used and there are some series that are round robin.

7. Netherlands (Hoofdklasse Honkbal--Dutch Major League Baseball)

Context: Hoofdeklasse Hankbal Site. Everything you need to know about the League. However, the best way for the new English speaking fan to learn the League is a great English blog:  Dutch Baseball Hangout Blog, which covers the League in English with contextual video links. It is written by an ex Dutch baseball player and will get you pretty quickly to the point where you can use the League site to best advantage. This is an 8 team league that plays mostly on weekends.

This is the premier Southern Hemisphere Domestic Club Competition. It is usually contested as one League with Teams from Australia, New Zealand (Aotearoa), and South Africa. Due to the Pandemic, South Africa dropped out this year and the other two countries are having separate competitions.
